According to the Open Doors Report, India is the US’s number 1 source of overseas graduate students, surpassing China.

See how India nearly surpassed China as the country with the most foreign students studying in the US by doubling its proportion in ten years. During the academic year 2022–2023, the number of Indians pursuing postgraduate studies in the US surged by 63% to 1.65 lakh, overtaking China for the first time in 15 years to become the country’s top source of international graduate students. During the same time period, there were 1.26 lakh Chinese graduate students studying in the US.

The most recent Open Doors Report, which was made public on Monday, states that 2.68 lakh Indian students studied at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the US last year. These students included those enrolled in Optional Practical Training programs, which let foreign graduates with an F-1 or student visa work for pay or volunteer work for a maximum of three years. Data analyzed by The Indian Express indicates that this is 35% more pupils than the 1.99 lakh students registered in 2021–2022 and marks the highest single-year jump in at least 23 years.

52% of all overseas students studying in America come from China and India together.
