Career as a Teacher in India: Types
To become a teacher, you should be a knowledge expert in your field. Talking about the academic path, you must have studied up to class 12th from a recognized board. After that, depending on the age group you want to teach, the qualifications vary.
Nursery Teacher
- For becoming a nursery school teacher, you can do an NTT (Nursery Teacher Training) course after the 12th, which of one year’s duration.
- Some institutions also hire graduates for nursery teachers, so you can complete your graduation also.
Primary School Teacher
- Primary school teachers teach children from classes 1 to 5. For this, after completing 12th you can go for Diploma in Education (D.Ed) which is a two-year diploma course.
- Alternatively, you can do PTT (Primary Teacher Training) program which is also for 2 years.
- You can do B.El.Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education), a four-year integrated degree program which is designed for training teachers at the primary/ elementary school level.
- Many states conduct Teacher Eligibility Test for recruiting teachers in government schools. The test score is considered an added advantage by the private schools also.
Secondary and Higher Secondary School teachers
- As secondary students’ teachers, you teach students from class 6th to 10th and for higher secondary, you teach students from class 11th and 12th. At this level, you teach subjects specific to your subjects at the graduation level. So graduation is a must.
- After graduation, you need to do a B.Ed (Bachelor in Education) a 2-year degree.
- Alternatively, you can go for post-graduation in your specialized subject and then do B.Ed.
- You can then appear for the TET exam conducted by the respective state government or CTET (Central Teaching Eligibility Test) conducted for recruiting teachers to government schools run by the central government.

College University Teacher
- To become a college lecturer a master’s degree is a must. If you want to become an associate professor, you must have a P.hD degree.
- After completing a master’s degree, you must qualify for NET (National Eligibility Test) which is conducted by the National Testing Agency.
- Some states conduct SET (State Eligibility Test) for recruitment to government colleges.
